Meet Sarah

Hi there! I’m Sarah, the voice behind The Amateur Apron. A Jesus follower, wife to Darrell, mother to our sons Henry & Teddy here on Earth and daughter Madeline in Heaven.

I started this blog in 2019 when Darrell and I were just dating and navigating his plethora of food allergies + my gluten intolerance. It was my way of documenting my experience of learning to cook and alter recipes to fit our needs.

Flash forward to now: we’re married and love to cook together as a family with our sons. And the blog led to lots of online friendships that actually helped me launch and grow a business in the craziness of 2020, Grace & Grandeur, and it is still going strong. In fact, I’ve taken quite a bit of time away from the blog in large part to the success of the business and to spend time with my kids.

Over time, the blog has become a creative outlet for me to share many aspects of our lives - DIY projects, fashion, motherhood, and of course cooking. I’m an amateur in not only the kitchen, but in so many areas of life.

We’re kinda crunchy, kinda not… working toward fewer toxins in our environment and diet but far from perfect. And it’s been an incremental process so a lot of old content on here probably doesn’t reflect our current views and the perspective we’ve gained over the years.

It is my hope that the blog reads like a voice memo from a friend. We’re just chit-chatting and catching up.

Food Allergies and Intolerance

In September 2015, I discovered my gluten intolerance after a summer of trips to the gastroenterologist. A single twenty-something, I shied away from the kitchen.

Upon meeting Darrell, in 2018, I found myself more interested in cooking and trying new recipes. He had his own set of dietary challenges - steering clear of nuts, legumes, poultry, sesame seeds (all known allergens) and now attempting to avoid soy due to sensitivity. One of our sons is also allergic to a number of foods including dairy, eggs, nuts, and sunflower. Together we have had quite the adventure embracing our combined dietary needs in the kitchen and dining out.
