Life Lately
Yesterday was the first day in over a year that I’ve blogged… how did that happen?! Oh, I know, I had a baby and grew a small business! I posted on Instagram last night how I don’t know how to fit blogging back into my life at this time but I do miss it incredibly. And now here I am at the laptop about 12 hours later typing out some more thoughts, haha.
Fennel, Brussels, Kale Salad
What makes this salad better than just a salad for dinner is the fact that the base is roasted. Maybe that makes it more of a “warm bowl”? I don’t know. But it’s delish. I started with roasting the fennel since its pretty dense compared to the kale and shave brussels.
Baby Registry Must-Haves from a First Time Mom, 2 Months In
I struggled with knowing what all was really needed versus what was just the cool new stuff parents wanted but could get by without when planning our registry. Since we’re only 2 months into parenthood, I can’t speak for future stages of baby life but I can definitely tell you what’s been helpful thus far!

Gluten Free Fried Pork Chops
We eat a lot of pork, so to say we were excited when I perfected my gluten free fried pork chop recipe would be a huge understatement! This is a perfect recipe for a busy weeknight because it is quick, easy and made from staple ingredients! Plus, it pairs well with all sorts of side dishes!
My Gluten Free Journey
September 2020 marks 5 years of my gluten free journey! 2015 seems like so long when I think about all the life changes that occurred in that timeframe but it kinda also feels like just yesterday! I remember the frustration and difficulty of those first few weeks and so many crazy disaster recipe experiments along the way. Today I’m reflecting on these past five years and talking about the path to discovering my gluten intolerance.
Whipped Ricotta and Gluten Free Crostini
We had a very chill weekend celebrating my birthday, just hanging out around the apartment. We cooked risotto and steak, I beat Darrell in 3/3 rounds of Sequence, and we stayed up late to catch the latest episode of Big Brother! I whipped up this incredible appetizer in place of a birthday cake for my special treat and it was sheer perfection!
Meet Sarah
Hi there! I’m Sarah, the voice behind The Amateur Apron. I’m married to Darrell and we live in Kentucky! During the pandemic, we got married, moved a few times, and somehow we’re living to tell about it. We welcomed a baby boy in early 2022.
I started this blog to help those with similar food allergies navigate the lifestyle change and feel comfortable in their kitchen. I’m no gifted culinary artist, I’m just your average gal attempting recipes or remaking my favorite dishes to be gluten free.
Over time, the blog has become a creative outlet for me to share many aspects of our lives - DIY projects, fashion, motherhood, and of course cooking. I’m an amateur in not only the kitchen, but in so many areas of life. While I love to share what I’ve learned, I hope my blog reads more like a note from a dear friend.
Food Allergies and Intolerance
In September 2015, I discovered my gluten intolerance after a summer of trips to the gastroenterologist. A single twenty-something, I shied away from the kitchen.
Upon meeting Darrell, in 2018, I found myself more interested in cooking and trying new recipes. He had his own set of dietary challenges - steering clear of nuts, legumes and poultry. Then, just before our son, Henry, was born, we learned of two additional food allergies Darrell has developed: sesame seeds and soy. Together we have had quite the adventure embracing our combined dietary needs in the kitchen and dining out.
